General Course Description
Our Cable Avoidance Course covers the use of the Leica (Geosystems) DD220 & Accessories to meet the HSG47 Health and Safety Guidelines for avoiding danger from underground services by utilising specialist cable and pipe locating equipment along with trained, competent operators. Each candidate will be instructed in the correct location techniques, methods of detection, and equipment limitations.
Who Will Benefit From Attending
With a mix of practical and theory-based exercises and tutorials, delegates will cover the required knowledge and awareness of utility services and participate in practical activities to learn best practices and operating methods to detect cables for excavation preparation. This course is for Operatives and Supervisors needing to locate underground apparatus for work on the roadways, highways and other sites.
Course Details:
Every year, there are over 60,000 cable strikes while performing excavation work reported in Great Britain alone. These accidents can be devastating for workers, businesses, and the community. There are many potential knock-on effects of cable strikes. Preparing with the correct training, personnel, and equipment is the only way to avoid huge problems further down the line.
Course Details:
- Duration: 4hrs (For CITB approved courses, this is extended to 6hrs)
- Delivery Methods: This course can be completed on site, or at one of our venues.
- Assessment: Practical examples and theory.
- Certification: Upon successful completion delegates will receive a certificate valid for 3 years.

- Guidance and Regulations. • Risks and consequences.
- The theory of Electro Magnetic Locating (EML)
- EML limitations and possible solutions. • Assessing the work area for signal interference and working within it
- Utility identification.
- Effective initial use of the Signal Transmitter in Induction and Connection. • Locating techniques. • Using crossover to aid Avoidance.
- Accessories and applying techniques.
- Written assessment.
- Data analysis software overview (if requested).
