Global Asbestos Awareness Week 2025

As we approach Global Asbestos Week 2025 (April 1st – 7th), it’s a perfect opportunity to reflect on the dangers of asbestos exposure and how we can protect ourselves. At PGL Midlands, we’re committed to raising awareness of asbestos risks, particularly for those working on older construction sites where the material is still present. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives due to asbestos-related illnesses, making it a top health risk in the workplace.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of fibres that were commonly used in construction throughout the early 1900s due to its strength, versatility, and low cost. However, over time, it was discovered that asbestos is extremely hazardous to human health. The tiny fibres can easily be inhaled or ingested, often without workers or residents realising. Once inside the body, these fibres can lead to serious health problems, primarily affecting the lungs.

Asbestos exposure is directly linked to several types of cancers, most notably mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by inhaling asbestos fibres. In 2021, asbestos-related deaths increased by 5,000, with 2,369 of those deaths due to mesothelioma.

What Does Asbestos Look Like?

Asbestos fibres are incredibly small and flexible, making it very difficult to spot the material with the naked eye. There are six different types of asbestos, but the three most common in the UK are:

  • Chrysotile (White Asbestos) – Commonly used in roofing, cement, tiles, and walls.
  • Amosite (Brown Asbestos) – Typically found in insulating boards.
  • Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos) – Known for its strength and thinness, this is the most dangerous type.

There are also three rarer types of asbestos, including Anthophyllite, Tremolite, and Actinolite, which are unlikely to be found on UK sites.

When Was Asbestos Banned?

In the UK, asbestos was banned in 1999, but it remains legal in some countries, such as Brazil and Russia. If you’re working on a property built before 1999, it’s essential to understand that asbestos may still be present, and proper precautions should be taken.
