The CAT & Genny Training Course is designed to equip workers with essential knowledge and practical skills in the safe use of Cable Avoidance Tools (CAT) and Signal Generators (Genny). This course is aligned with HSG47 guidelines and best practice and helps reduce the risk of utility strikes during excavation or groundwork.

Delivered using the latest Radiodetection CAT4 and Genny4 models, this hands-on course is ideal for operatives, supervisors, and anyone responsible for detecting underground services before digging.


What Is CAT & Genny Training Course?

CAT and Genny training, also referred to as Cable Avoidance Training, ensures that workers understand how to locate underground utilities safely using electromagnetic location techniques. The training focuses on avoiding contact with buried cables, pipes, and other services by using CAT & Genny equipment properly.

  • Inspection, calibration, and pre-use checks
  • Correct use of a CAT, in all modes and sweeps
  • Correct use of a Genny, including direct and induction, pairs and nulling out
  • Handling, maintenance, and transportation of location tools
  • Safe working practices around buried services
  • Practical using CAT & Genny on-site

All content is delivered in line with the latest industry standards and HSE guidance.

  • Duration: Half-day (approx. 4 hours)
  • Assessment: Practical assessment and tutor observation
  • Certification: Certificate of Competence issued on successful completion
  • Validity: 3 Years
  • Refresher Required: After 3 years or as per company policy
