NRSWA – Streetworks Supervisors Course

This New Roads & Street Works Act (NRSWA) for Supervisor’s Course teaches the skills supervisors need to carry out work to the standards of the NRSWA 1991 – the legal framework for street works. This street works supervisor training is essential for those aiming to manage operatives effectively.


WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Those supervising works within roads, streets, and pathways or anyone who wishes to advance their working knowledge of street works as a supervisor. It is a legal requirement to have a NRSWA qualification before working on a street works site as a supervisor.


WHAT WILL YOU LEARN? (To Supervise)

    • Location and avoidance of underground services
    • Monitoring signing, lighting, and guarding; co-ordination procedures and code of practice
    • Monitoring excavation in the highway; specifications, techniques, road types, materials
    • Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials, non-bituminous sub-base and road-base materials, and modular surfaces and concrete highways
    • Monitoring laying practices and reinstatement of bituminous materials; specification and types

COURSE DETAILS

  • DURATION: 5 Days
  • DELIVERY METHODS: Open Course
  • CERTIFICATION: Upon completion of our CABWI accredited Streetworks Operatives course, you will receive your Streetworks Qualification Register Card (SWQR). The SWQR card needs to be renewed every five years.
  • COMPETENCY: Summarise the requirements of the current NRSW Act, select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities, monitor duties performed by Operatives to standards in line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable and provide a safe working environment for themselves and others. This certification is vital for those pursuing a career as a street work supervisor.

FUNDING SUPPORT

SHORT COURSE GRANT: This course is eligible for the following short course grant via CITB:

  • Supervisor (Full 5-day course): £900 Per Person
  • Operative (Full 5-day course): £1,040 Per Person

Note: You must be a CITB levy payer.

More grant is payable for Concrete Slab & Hot Lay (Unit 008/015 & 007).

SKILLS & TRAINING FUND: Are you a CITB-Registered employer, up to date with your Levy
return and employ between 1-250 direct staff or CIS (No PAYE)? If you answered yes, this training may be offset with funding as part of an application for between £2,500 up to £25,000 for training your workforce. How much does a streetworks course cost?

The cost of a Streetworks course varies depending on the type of course and location (e.g., on-site or at our Streetworks Centre in Bordesley Green near Birmingham City Centre). Streetworks courses, also known as NRSWA (New Roads and Street Works Act) training, are required for anyone working on public roads, streets, or pathways.

We offer various NRSWA courses:

  • NRSWA Operatives: £675 + VAT (5 Days)
  • NRSWA Supervisors: £675 + VAT (5 Days)
  • NRSWA Refresher: £325 + VAT (2 Days)
  • NRSWA Location & Avoidance of Underground Apparatus (LA): £185 + VAT (1 Day)
  • NRSWA Signing, Lighting & Guarding: £200 + VAT (1 Day)

How long does a streetworks supervisor certificate last?

The Streetworks Supervisor (NRSWA) certificate lasts for five years. After five years, you will need to do our refresher or reassessment course to renew your certification and keep your qualification updated. This ensures that supervisors are up-to-date with the latest regulations and best practices for working on public roads, streets, or pathways.

What to do if my streetworks certificate has expired?

If your certificate has expired, you will need to renew your Streetworks certificate. To do this, book our NRSWA Refresher course for either Operatives or Supervisors. The refresher course consists of 2 days of training, including both classroom and practical assessments, held at our Streetworks Centre in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. The course costs £325 + VAT.

Upon successful completion of the refresher course, delegates will receive a certified CABWI certificate for all modules completed and a SWQR ID card. The SWQR card is renewable every five years.

What does a streetworks supervisor do?

Streetworks Supervisors plan and manage operatives and Streetworks projects, ensuring that they are in compliance with legal and safety regulations (NRSWA). Supervisors plan and coordinate work, monitor safety, conduct inspections, and maintain accurate documentation. They are essentially responsible for monitoring and supervising the work operatives carry out e.g. signing, lighting and guarding, excavation and reinstatement practises.

Can you do a streetworks supervisor course online?

No, our Streetworks Supervisor course is delivered at our centre and comprises of group exercises, oral and practical assessments, supplemented with video and classroom-based tutorials.
