Interested in starting a career in streetworks? You’re in the right place and with the best training provider to introduce you to the world of streetworks.
At PGL Midlands, we deliver the full range of New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA) streetworks courses, including NRSWA Operatives and Supervisor training, Refreshers, Signing, Lighting and Guarding, Locating Underground Apparatus, and more.
Understand What is Required to Start a Career in Streetworks
In order to start your career in streetworks, one must complete the NRSWA Operatives or Supervisor courses. These courses focus on introducing and demonstrating the skills and knowledge required to perform operative or supervisor duties safely and in accordance with the standards prescribed by the current NRSWA Act and relevant guidance.
To learn more about our Streetworks Operative and Supervisor (NRSWA) courses, visit our Streetworks Training Courses page for full details on course content, availability, and booking.
Get a Relevant Streetworks Qualification / Certification
To legally work on public roads and highways in the UK, streetworks workers need to obtain their Streetworks Works Qualification Register (SWQR) card. This can be achieved by completing our 5-day Streetworks Operatives or Supervisor (NRSWA) courses at one of our specialist streetworks centres, either in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, or at our centre in Harworth, Doncaster, both complete with a dedicated streetworks and EUSR practical area.
Get Real-Life Experience
Whilst qualifications and certifications provide you with a foundational understanding of streetworks, gaining hands-on experience is important for developing the practical skills when working towards getting a career in streetworks. Our streetworks courses offer both theoretical and practical learning at our dedicated streetworks centres.
Acquire a License
Licences for Street Works Operatives or Supervisors are not required to apply for a Street Works S50 Licence. The S50 licence is needed for installing utility apparatus, such as gas or sewer connections, in the highway. This process is typically managed by the employer or project manager. However, depending on the work involved, operatives and supervisors may still require SWQR qualifications. For the latest requirements on S50 licences, visit the official government website: Section 50 Street Works Licences.
The Skills You Will Need to Have a Successful Career in Streetworks
Health and Safety Awareness
It is important to have a high awareness for health and safety as streetworks workers will be working in high-traffic areas with heavy machinery.
Communication and Team Work
Team work and clear communication is crucial in streetworks. Coordinating with team members, local authorities, and the public is important for ensuring safety on streetworks projects.
Technical Knowledge of Roadworks
Understanding road construction within the requirements and legal framework of the NRSWA, as well as traffic management, will benefit your career in streetworks.
