Health and safety at work Summary statistics for Great Britain 2021 – Key facts
Health and safety at work is extremely important. The way your employees feel when coming to work, both in regards to safety and their physical health will determine how well they perform their jobs. In this article, the PGL Midlands team will shed light on some baffling statistics about health and safety at work, and how many industries might have to have a think about improving their facilities and providing their staff with proper training.
It is mental-health awareness month and here at PGL, we take mental health seriously and want to encourage other employers to do the same.
Work-related ill-health
- 1.7 million Workers suffering from work-related ill health (new or long-standing) in 2020/21
- 850,000 Workers suffering from a new case of work-related ill health in 2020/21.
- 13,000 Deaths each year are estimated to be linked to past exposure at work, primarily to chemicals or dust.
Mental health is a determining factor in how well employees perform their jobs and feel on a daily basis. Although employers now care more about the mental wellbeing of their staff, there is still a lot of room for improvement. Employers should focus more on providing in-house mental health services, or conducting training with their staff and colleagues on how to deal with mental duress.
Work-related stress, depression or anxiety
- 0.8 million Workers suffering from work-related stress, depression or anxiety (new or long-standing) in 2020/21
- 822,000 Workers suffering from workrelated stress, depression or anxiety (new or long-standing) in 2020/21

- 470,000 Workers suffering from workrelated musculoskeletal disorders (new or longstanding) in 2020/21
- 162,000 Workers suffering from a new case of work-related musculoskeletal disorder in 2020/21
Occupational lung disease
- 0.4 million Workers sustaining a non-fatal injury in 2020/21.
- 12,000 Lung disease deaths each year estimated to be linked to past exposures at work.
- 2,369 Mesothelioma deaths in 2019, with a similar number of lung cancer deaths linked to past exposures to asbestos.
- 17,000 Estimated new cases of breathing or lung problems caused or made worse by work each year on average over the last three years, according to self-reports from the Labour Force Survey
Workplace injury is a lot more common than people think. There is an obvious lack of health and safety training from the below data, which means that employers are not prioritising their employer’s safety and health. Training is not a complicated process and will save people from getting injured in the future.
