New Roads & Street Works Act (NRSWA) – Supervisor Refresher

Supervisors will gain the skills to be competent

This New Roads & Street Works Act (NRSWA) for Supervisor’s course teaches the skills supervisors need to carry out work to the standards of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 – the legal framework for street works.

It is for new roads and street work supervisors who:

  • locate underground apparatus
  • set up equipment for works in the highway
  • carry out excavation, backfill and reinstatement

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Those Supervising works within roads, streets and pathways or anyone who wishes to advance their working knowledge of street works.


WHAT WILL YOU LEARN 

  • Location and avoidance of underground services
  • Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding; co-ordination procedures and code of practice
  • Monitoring excavation in the highway; specifications, techniques, road types, materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of non-bituminous sub-base and road-base materials
  • Monitoring laying practices and reinstatement of bituminous materials; specification and types of materials
  • Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete highways.

COURSE DETAILS

DURATION: 2 Days

DELIVERY METHODS: Open Course

ASSESSMENT:

  • 2 days of training and of technical tests.
  • A high proportion of group exercises with continuous oral and practical assessments, supplemented with video and classroom-based tutorials.
  • A NRSWA training group may contain a mix of both Operatives and Supervisors. Sessions will be varied within the overall framework to allow the most effective development of the candidate.

CERTIFICATION: Street Works Qualifications Register Card (SWQR) through CABWI – Awarding Body for the Water & Utilities Industries which is renewable every five years

COMPETENCY: Summarise the requirements of the current NRSW Act, select appropriate personal protective and safety equipment as required to carry out street works activities, monitor duties performed by Operatives to standards in-line with current legislation, and ACOP where applicable and provide a safe working environment for themselves and others
